Mark the certificate as trusted (I suspect not because I think it needs the intermediate and root cert from the CA) or 2. Again, I am not running an enterprise setup so there is no MDM or InTune setup available to me (which are the only articles I've seen on the web). On the off chance it was referring to my PFX file that is my personal S/MIME certificate, I tried that but got an error from the website. When I try to convert those to PFX (which appears to be the only format that iOS Outlook will recognize), I get errors from openssl and when I try to use an online certificate format converter, it wants me to include a private key along with the PEM file which I'm guessing is the private key from DigiCert which there is obviously no way I can obtain. Unfortunately, I can only download them from DigiCert as PEM or CRT formatted files. My assumption is that I would need to also install the intermediate and root certificates as well. This is a SHA DigiCert certificate so it isn't self-signed or anything. I've clicked on the certificate (shows up below the signed and encrypted radio buttons) and it says "Untrusted" for "Verification". However, I cannot turn on "signed" on the S/MIME page (S/MIME is enabled) because it says there is a problem with my certificate. This installed the cert just fine (after I supplied the password) and it shows up in the Settings for Outlook iOS. I was able to send the password protected S/MIME certificate as an attachment to myself in an email, navigate to settings for the O365 account in iOS Outlook and click on the attachment.
Unfortunately I would prefer to use Outlook as my email client on my iPhone and i have so far been unable to fix this. I could then select the S/MIME certificate in the Mail preferences for signing and now emails I send from the Apple Mail account on the phone are properly signed.
I was able to install the cert and use it on iOS in Apple Mail by downloading the S/MIME cert, the intermediate cert and the root cert via mobile Safari, installing them and then enabling and trusting the certificates in the "Profiles" section of Preferences on the phone. I am using O365 for my email server and am not an enterprise - this is for my personal email.
